NSAIDS & Infertility

October 04, 2014 | by Wing Yiu Chan

Recent studies have found the possible cause for infertility is due to long-term use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), including Advil, Aspirin, Motrin, etc. These drugs cause problems in ovulation, preventing the release of eggs from follicles. Without mature eggs, fertilization is impossible.

Infertile women commonly share one or more of the following symptoms: menstrual cramps, headaches, lower back pain, abdominal bloating, tenderness in the breasts. All these are associated with pain, and NSAIDs are either prescribed by doctors, or readily available over-the-counter. Prolonged use may relieve symptoms, however, will not fix the problem, and might result in drug overdose and dependence over time.

The effect of acupuncture treatment is different. Needles are inserted into the body to stimulate the body’s mechanism to work on its own. Our body knows best about its healing plans. As long as we’ve targeted the source correctly, it’ll naturally go either way to fix the condition, bringing things back to equilibrium. Now, how much more can you ask for? The perfect key to lock and unlock a problem.

The good news is that this type of infertility is reversible when the use of pain killers is stopped. But how are women to deal with the throbbing pain, which in some cases the pain is so strong it may even cause patients to pass out? We need to focus on dealing with the underlying cause, instead of just relieving symptoms.

The ultimate cause is different in every patient, whether it be stress in life, issues in relationships, emotional abuse, trauma – the list may go on. What everything comes down to is blockage in the meridians. Blood, fluids, and energy aren’t flowing smoothly in the body. Our body tells us of this imbalance by generating painful sensations in parts where there’s obstructive flow.

Without risking any side effect from oral medication, herbs included, acupuncture treatment focuses on fixing the underlying problem by improving the flow of energy in the obstructed meridians. It’s a win-win situation: no drugs to harm our liver and kidneys AND pain-free menstruations plus normal ovulation. Now… let your other half finish the job with fertilization…
